The Rochester Knighthawks announced that the team has agreed to a two-year contract extension with General Manager & Vice President of Lacrosse Operations, Dan Carey.

The new deal will take Carey through to the 2023/24 National Lacrosse League season.

Carey was one of the first hires for the expansion-era Knighthawks after successfully serving as the Colorado Mammoth’s GM the previous three seasons.

The team finished 2-10 during the pandemic shortened 2019/20 NLL season, the franchise’s first after the original Knighthawks moved to Halifax. So far this year, Rochester has jumped out to an impressive 2-1 start, Carey making a number of noteworthy moves during the league’s double offseason.

Carey added the likes of Dan Coates, Matt Gilray and Evan Kirk (since sidelined for the remainder of the season) leading into the current NLL campaign. He also drafted forward Ryan Smith and signed undrafted American rookie Charlie Bertrand, who has been one of this year’s most impressive first-year finds.

“It has been one of the best experiences of my professional career to be part of building the Knighthawks organization,” Carey said in this week’s announcement. “I’m grateful to our owners and leadership group for their continued trust and support. I’m fully committed to building a successful franchise and look forward to what our future holds.”

The Knighthawks, who were recently forced to postpone a game “due to COVID activity”, don’t play again until January 21st when they host the Georgia Swarm and Blue Cross Arena.

A former first round NLL Entry Draft selection, Carey would spend six seasons with the Mammoth and one with the Toronto Rock prior to retiring early due to concussion issues, telling the Peterborough Examiner at the time, “I still love the game of lacrosse, I'll just have to enjoy it as a fan.”

The Knighthawks are clearly thankful the former NLL star has transitioned into much more than just a fan since leaving the floor.
