Wings add McComb to staff with hopes of growing low-ranking goal total

The Philadelphia Wings have announced the addition of Jeff McComb to their coaching staff, the former Saskatchewan Rush coach taking over duties as the team’s offensive coordinator.

McComb, who served as Derek Keenan’s assistant with the Rush franchise for several extremely successful seasons, was promoted as the team’s head coach in August of 2020.

After an uncharacteristically rough start to their 2022 regular season, the Rush relieved McComb of his duties while they sat 4-10 and unlikely to qualify for the playoffs, which they eventually missed for the first time in over a decade.

“Jeff is a proven winner,” said Wings General Manager and Head Coach Paul Day in the team’s announcement. “His tenure as the offensive coordinator for the Saskatchewan Rush proved to be successful as the Rush were one of the most innovative and creative offenses in the NLL.

“We are confident that Jeff will bring a winning culture and championship pedigree that will take the Wings to the next level. I have known Jeff for over 35 years, and I am excited to be able to bring his talents to the Philadelphia Wings.”

Philadelphia, who qualified for the playoffs on the last weekend of the NLL season but were soon eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, registered just 185 goals over their 18-game regular season. Only the last-place Rochester Knighthawks finished with fewer goals, one less at 184. The Wings also had the smallest even-strength goal tally of any team in the league (146).

See how Philadelphia’s even-strength, power-play and short-handed scoring stacked up against the rest of the league during last year’s NLL regular season (ranked in order of total goals scored).
