The Vancouver Warriors have announced that two-time National Lacrosse League Coach of the Year Troy Cordingley has been hired as the team’s new head coach.

Phil Sanderson was also confirmed as a new assistant coach, the Warriors retaining Curtis Hodgson, Dan Perreault and Dwight Maetche in other coaching-related roles with the club.

Cordingley ended this past season as the Buffalo Bandits’ Assistant General Manager & Director of Scouting, but has previously served in a head-coaching capacity with the Calgary Roughnecks (2008-2009), Toronto Rock (2010-2013) and Bandits (2014-2018).

Vancouver’s new bench boss coached both the Roughnecks (2009) and Rock (2011) to NLL Cup victories, and was twice voted the league’s Les Bartley Award (Coach of the Year) winner with those two teams too. He is one of just a handful of head coaches with 100 or more wins in the league.

Currently, Cordingley is also an assistant coach with the Mimico Mountaineers of the Ontario Junior Lacrosse League.

Cordingley had previously played almost a decade in the NLL with the Bandits (1993-1999), Albany Attack (2000-2001) and Rochester Knighthawks (2001). He won two titles with the Bandits. The Attack are actually the same franchise Cordingley now coaches, the team moving from New York State to San Jose (CA), Everett (WA) and Langley (BC) prior to calling Vancouver’s Rogers Arena home.

The addition of the East-based Cordingley most definitely diverts from the very local vibe the team has had since the franchise was purchased by Canucks Sports & Entertainment in June of 2018.

The Warriors cut ties with Head Coach Chris Gill and Assistant Coach Kaleb Toth earlier this month due to the team’s disappointing 6-12 regular-season record and playoff miss.
