Saskatchewan Rush re-sign UFA Kyle Rubisch to one-year deal
Last night, the Saskatchewan Rush announced the re-signing of unrestricted free agent Kyle Rubisch to a one-year contract.
Rubisch, alongside long-time Rush teammate Chris Corbeil, have been two of the most talked about UFAs over the past year, many anticipating both to bolt after rejecting a franchise tag offer from the club in recent weeks. Corbeil remains unsigned.
"We are very pleased to have Kyle Rubisch back for his 12th season with the Rush,” Saskatchewan GM Derek Keenan said in the team’s announced on Thursday evening. “Rubes is the best defender in league history, and I don't think anyone would argue that.
“He had another All-Pro season in '22 as once again he was a menace on opposing offenses. With the Rush in the midst of transitioning to the younger core group on the backend it's a bonus to not only have him around to continue to produce but to also mentor the young guys!"
The Rush, who recently handed over their full-time coaching duties to Jimmy Quinlan and have also been busy signing & re-signing others this week, struggled through much of 2022, missing the playoffs this past season for the first time since 2011.
After Rubisch & Corbeil rejected the team’s franchise offer earlier this offseason, the team placed the tag on vet defenseman Ryan Dilks.
“I have a plan. I’m just kind of waiting here, waiting to hear from a couple of guys,” Keenan told The Star Phoenix earlier this week. “In terms of our own free agents, obviously if I could have got deals done before today, I would have. Now I’m waiting to hear what they’re going to be offered from other teams.”
In addition to Corbeil, other notable NLL UFAs that remain unsigned include: Curtis Dickson, Kevin Crowley, Matt Vinc, Brodie Merrill, Jordan Hall, Nick Weiss, Shawn Evans, Stephen Keogh, Zach Greer and Jeremy Noble.
