Respected Rush captain Chris Corbeil signs with Rock for three seasons
The Toronto Rock have announced that the team has signed unrestricted free agent Chris Corbeil to a three-year contract, the now former Saskatchewan captain not following in long-time teammate Kyle Rubisch’s footsteps, who earlier this week re-signed with the Rush for another season.
Corbeil was one of just a handful of unsigned high-profile UFAs still on the market, with several NLL teams expected to have made a serious offer for his services this week.
“Chris was a main target of ours in free agency,” Rock Owner, President, and GM Jamie Dawick said in today’s team announcement. “I’ve been in constant contact with him since the free agency period opened, but still giving him enough space to make what amounts to a pretty important decision.
“He’s chosen to make Toronto his next, and hopefully final, destination to play in the NLL. I’m extremely excited that we got our guy.”
The Rock have been extremely busy over the last number of days past picking up Corbeil. Yesterday the team traded Rob Hellyer to the Las Vegas Desert Dogs for a pair of future first-round picks, signed UFA Corey Small, plus re-signed Dan Dawson midweek and 2022 Defensive Player of the Year Mitch de Snoo prior to this past Monday’s start of NLL free agency.
“I love the blend of youth and experience on the roster,” Corbeil said in the Rock’s press release. “There’s so much talent on the back end, and that’s what I can attribute a lot of my team success to in Saskatchewan.
“I see a lot of similarities on the back end with the Rock.”
Originally a second-round selection of the Buffalo Bandits in 2009, Corbeil was traded to the Edmonton Rush two seasons later, a franchise he would eventually lead to three NLL titles.
