Mathieu Gautier & Miners easily set new RMLL scoring standards at Minto Cup

During a Minto Cup tournament that has already been witness to a number of noteworthy firsts & record-book rewrites, Miners Lacrosse Club players have quietly set new scoring standards for a Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League representative.

Currently tied for the tournament’s point-scoring lead, power-forward Mathieu Gautier’s assist (13) & point tally (20) after last night’s stunning 20-12 win over the Toronto Beaches set a new record for an RMLL player at a Minto Cup.

With at least two games left to go in this weekend’s final against the Whitby Warriors, Gautier is just a goal shy of matching an RMLL player’s best-ever goal total at the tournament too.

In fact, teammate Jack Royer’s assist (12) & point total (17) after four games sits second behind only Gautier in Alberta’s all-time single-Minto sums, the pair passing Calgary Roughnecks’ forward Dan Taylor’s previous record in both statistical stat columns.

Taylor’s totals were achieved with the Calgary Mountaineers during the 2014 Minto Cup semi-final series against the Coquitlam Adanacs. Zach Mantei (Saint Joseph’s University) had matched Taylor’s chart-topping points with the Okotoks Raiders during the 2019 Minto in Langley, British Columbia.

The most goals scored at a single Minto by an RMLL player happened during the 2018 tournament when current Colorado Mammoth forward Brett McIntyre scored 8 times for the Okotoks Raiders. Gautier sits just a goal back from matching that mark, but a host of other Miners at this year’s Minto could crack that total soon too: Callin Harris (6), Marcus Needham (5), Jake Bowen (5), Davis Dame (5) and Royer (5). Only 23 RMLL players have scored five or more times at a single Minto Cup, and six of them are suiting up for the Miners at the national tourney right now.

The Miners currently lead the Minto with 47 total goals, which is also a new record for an RMLL team. The Miners’ +7 goal differential is tied with the Warriors for tops in the 2022 tournament. If the Albertans can finish with a positive GD after their upcoming best-of-three series, they’d be the first RMLL team to leave a Minto in the black.

Below, check out the RMLL’s all-time individual goal, assist and point leaders during a single Minto season, today’s Miners either already owning the top spot or should shortly.
