The Georgia Swarm, who have already lost a number of veteran players to retirement or free agency this past offseason, will now be without forward Miles Thompson for the 2022-23 National Lacrosse League regular season.

Officially moved to the team’s “Injured Reserve List-Season Ending” earlier today, Thompson was sidelined for most of last year due to an injury as well.

A former third overall draft selection, Thompson missed minimal action during his first six years in the league. The former 30-goal getter played in just three regular-season games during the 2021-22 season, scoring six times during that short stretch. In recent seasons, Thompson is most remembered for burying the OT-winning goal in the 2017 NLL Cup Final, the Swarm sweeping the best-of-three series against the Saskatchewan Rush.

Earlier this offseason the team lost Mike Poulin, Jordan Hall, Joel White and Stephan Leblanc to retirement, although all four were also unrestricted free agents. Georgia will also be without defenseman Chad Tutton, the free agent opting to sign with the Philadelphia Wings in August, and impressive 2022 rookie Connor Kirst, who was scooped up in the Las Vegas Desert Dogs Expansion Draft.

This week, the Swarm acquired Jeremy Thompson, Miles’ older brother, in a trade with the Panther City Lacrosse Club.

Notable additions to the Swarm offense this year include Andrew Kew, who was picked up in a deal with the Albany FireWolves, and rookie Ryan Lanchbury, who many expect to be a strong contender for the league’s Rookie of the Year award.
